Titled Three British Mosques, the Applied Arts Pavilion was created by architect Shahed Saleem alongside curators Ella Kilgallon and Christopher Turner as a part of the Special Project at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2021.
Saleem has created 1:1 scale case studies of three London mosques, celebrating the South Asian diaspora in the UK by portraying the evolution and adaptation of mosques and local buildings.
The design of the exhibition works in contrast of the colourful, life-sized replicas recreated in the pavilion. The visual language is dry, administrative and technical; and built on a range of materials most often used for DIY home improvement and building.
